Congratulations Wellingtonians, Walk2Work Wellington 2009 was a success!
More than 500 people walked to work, graced the event, met up with friends at Frank Kitts and enjoyed their hot cross buns, bagels and hot coffee.
Very important guests like: Hon. Steven Joyce – Minister of Transport, Hon. Kerry Prendergast – Mayor of Wellington, Mike Cherrett – Deputy Commissioner, British High Commission, Emma Daken – who walked from Cape Reinga to Bluff to raise money for research into a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, Hon. Helia Parata – MP, came to celebrate with all those who walked to work. Ms. Mere Boynton serenaded everyone with two of her beautiful songs.
Speakers from Toastmasters, Luke Guyton, Rob Julian and Aaron Davy talked about their encouraging and funny Walk2Work stories.
Spot prizes from Bodyworks, Cancer Society, Livings Streets Aotearoa, Snapper Cards and Cafe Neo were awarded to the winners of the draw from among those who registered. The grand prize, a Nordic Walking starter package, was awarded to the best Walk2Work story.
The spirit of goodwill and the sincerity to help really showed, so strongly, through the efforts of all the wonderful volunteers from Scenic Walkers, Marathon Clinic, Toastmasters and Victoria University. Even the weather smiled, with a warm sunshine, all through out the programme. Road safety for walkers, runners, bikers and pedestrians was also a highlight.
It is clear that Walk2Work Wellington 2009 was successful in its message of encouraging everyone to walk to work, walk more and contribute to the betterment of the environment and in the process be healthier and have fun!
To all Wellingtonians, THANK YOU for walking to work! Keep it up!
And for those who haven’t started – just do it!
